Manny Pacquiao has waged war with Juan Manuel Marquez before. Their previous two have been epic battles, but the third will seem more like a scene from Godfather III.
There is something that happens to movie trilogies that has them peter out by the third iteration. The spark and ingenuity that was there in the first two movies is all gone by the third.
The same fate will bestow Pacquiao-Marquez III, largely for the same reasons that third-parters mostly suck. The third movie, for the most part, is a cash grab. There are of course exceptions.
Indiana Jones had the strongest third-parter of any series, saving it's annihilation of credibility for the fourth installment. As I mentioned, Godfather III was only successful in establishing that Sofia Coppola couldn't act.
Sylvester Stallone tried to film every last one of his fictional Rocky's career fights. It was a brazen act of, "let's see how many of these we can make." I can only forgive him for giving us the epic montages in Rocky IV.
The same goes with PacMan and his rival. It is a trilogy made out of convenience and not need. There's is a story that has been told.
Marquez may be fast, but he has aged since their last meeting. Sure he just knocked out a punching bag in Likar Ramos, but that was a warm-up fight meant to bolster ticket sales for the big day.
The dog and pony show is in full effect. Marquez promises to annihilate Pacquiao, as others before him have. There is no proof that three years has made Marquez a more stout fighter than Manny.
The producers, in a sense, are forcing the issue. This fight will go the same way as Shane Mosley's attempt. An aging fighter will have one more big purse as Manny fails to net the fight we all want to see, the one that has never before happened.
There is something about the first movie in a trilogy. It is an exciting and enthralling process. Yes, I would much rather see Pacquiao-Mayweather I, than this tired storyline.
